Northern Uganda Village Health Outreach Project
NUV-HOP is an intense collaboration between medical students from Northern Uganda and Belgium. Our project's primary goal is to contribute to healthcare and health education in rural Northern Uganda where conventional healthcare is inadequate in terms of facilities, medically trained personnel, therapies, and physical accessibility to the few health centers. Together with local authorities, doctors and volunteers, we aim to reinforce the local health centers by doing outreaches, and provide relevant information on health topics by doing health talks. In short, the outreaches are one-day mobile clinics where patients have the opportunity to have a free of charge consultation with a doctor and therapy if needed. Moreover, local organizations are mobilized that have expertise in a certain health domain such as HIV/AIDS, cervical cancer, family planning etc. The concept of health talks entails interactive health education sessions, primarily in schools. The topics covered include mental health, puberty, HIV/AIDS, menstruation, etc.
