NORTHERN UGANDA FROM AN EAGLE’S POINT OF VIEW.
Northern Uganda is one of the four regions in the country Uganda, inhabited by majorly the luo speaking tribes of Lango and Acholi, a population of about 5,148,882 encompassed in the districts of Lira, Otuke, Alebtong, Dokolo, Amolatar, Apac, Kole, Oyam, Gulu, Amuru, Nwoya, Pader, Kitgum, Lamwoo, with the regions capital in the town of Gulu in Gulu District.
For 20 years, Northern Uganda was rocked by a very demeaning, atrocious and life depleting civil war that started in late 1986 . This war led by the spirit guided Joseph Kony altered so much the social, economic, political and psychological setting of Northern Uganda which from the onset of the war lagged behind in almost all aspects of growth. And since the ceasing of warfare in 2006, pre-war conditions and levels of livelihoods have still not been restored, leaving the region still lagging behind a lot.

Looking at two aspects of the war that is the impact to the population in particularly the psychological effect and then the effect on the health service delivery in the area, these aspects leave the inhabitants of Northern Uganda still very vulnerable and left behind. A lot of families lost their loved ones to the war majority of the deceased being the able older population and youth, leaving behind a lot of child and women led families. A traumatic experience that still follows the winds that blow the land. A lot has been put in place to normalize the psychological trauma including counseling, mental health services and interventions, amnesty to mention but a few but more intervention is still wanting.
Turning to health service delivery, I will be a mocking bird prototype if I admit that this piece of writing can describe every sorry state that this region’s healthcare is in. It’s very true that the parties involved in restructuring the healthcare system in this land are spending sleepless nights to develop policies that can forever change the face of health service delivery in this area, however practicality bears it’s face to the ground and yet it’s one string that should be strengthened and used to tie all the horns and corners of this great land. The hope for a better health service delivery remains so strong amongst all that trek this land, the zeal and passion in the young minds working towards this goal is amazing and commendable and its no doubt that with their hands forever embracing the hospitality and spirit of love and togetherness instilled in them by their fore fathers, they will definitely achieve this goal.
